She Moved Through the Fair
This sad Irish song has nothing to do with Weyhill Fair.Weyhill, in Hampshire, was the site of a fair beginning in the eleventh century and ending in 1957. The village also has an attractive Norman church, built on the site of an earlier Saxon church and perhaps an older temple.
The song tells of a young man mourning his love who has died suddenly. She visits him one night with the chilling message, "It will not be long love, 'til our wedding day." I have always assumed that meant that he would die soon.
