Garryowen
Garryowen is a lively Irish drinking song. It can be sung or danced to. The picture above, of the columnar basalt, is very attractive but has nothing to do with the song. The most famous area of columnar basalt is the Giants' Causeway, in Ireland. There are also similar sites in Iceland, which I have visited with my geologist husband. Garryowen, the song, is also famous as the march of the United States Seventh Cavalry, which was deservedly punished at the Battle of the Little Big Horn for attempting to steal First Nations land. Unfortunately it was only a brief respite for the people of the plains.
